Automotive LED Trends 2026: Software-Defined Vehicles Reshape the Market

According to TrendForce’s 2026 Global Automotive LED Market report, trade policy shifts and raw-material inflation are squeezing the margins of automotive lighting makers. Their response: accelerating the move from basic lighting toward high-value digital lighting systems for Software-Defined Vehicles (SDVs) and ADAS — enabling dynamic lighting effects and active safety functions.

The numbers tell the story: global automotive lighting revenue is projected to reach $35.7 billion in 2025, and SDV-driven demand is expected to push the market to $47.07 billion by 2030, with automotive LED reaching $4.51 billion.

1. Adaptive Headlights Go Mainstream

Adaptive headlights are forecast to reach 22.8 million units by 2030 (23.8% penetration), led by Europe (30.9%) and China (29.1%). Micro LED headlights — offering pixel-independent control for glare-free high beams and pedestrian-warning projection — are already adopted by Volkswagen, Porsche, Audi, Mercedes-Benz, NIO, and Zeekr. Average resolution requirement: ~20,000 pixels, with premium models moving to 70,000–100,000 pixels between 2028 and 2030.

2. Intelligent Signal Displays

Front-facing signal displays (adopted by IM Motors, GWM, BMW iX3, and others) enable pedestrian-yielding signals and charging-status communication while parked. The technology roadmap centers on P0.8–P2.5 LED displays and Mini LED COB — with ams OSRAM’s flexible ALIYOS platform pushing Mini LEDs onto transparent film for display panels of any shape.

3. Decorative & Ambient Lighting Ambient lighting

grille lamps, and autonomous-driving marker lamps are projected to grow to a $317 million market by 2030. The SAE J3134 standard (ratified in 2025) is expected to accelerate adoption of ADAS marker lamps by brands including Mercedes-Benz, Li Auto, and Xiaomi.

4. Mini LED Cabin Displays & Panoramic HUD

Driven by HDR, local dimming, and curved designs, Mini LED automotive displays have been adopted by NIO, BYD, GM, Ford, and others since 2022 — with Mercedes-Benz, BMW, and Hyundai-Kia following in 2026–2027. Panoramic head-up displays are next, led by BMW and Xiaomi.
